Terrazza Locarno: a flower-filled roof near Piazza del Popolo
A century-old hotel in the Tridente
Since 1925, the Hotel Locarno has been an institution of the Tridente, the district between Piazza del Popolo, Via del Corso and the banks of the Tiber. Its bar, with its period decor, has seen artists and writers come and go over the century. On the top floor, Terrazza Locarno offers a more airy interlude: a roof filled with plants, terracotta pots and wicker armchairs, with the domes of Piazza del Popolo as a backdrop and, further away, the silhouette of Trinità dei Monti.
From sunset to dinner
The terrace suits every end-of-day mood: a cocktail at aperitivo time, a menu designed for sunset or a dinner that stretches late into the evening. The drinks list is created by mixologist Nicholas Pinna, while chef Domenico Smargiassi reinvents the classics of central Italy with a modern touch and a few orientalist nods, in a menu that changes with the seasons.
Seasonal opening
Terrazza Locarno only operates in the warmer months, with a break in the height of summer. In 2026, it opened from 12 May to 25 July, then from 4 September to 24 October, Tuesday to Saturday, from 6pm to midnight; the calendar is set each year by the hotel. The rest of the time, the Bar Locarno and its secret garden take over on the ground floor, every day from 7am to 1am.
Practical information
The hotel is at Via della Penna 22, a few minutes' walk from Piazza del Popolo; Flaminio station (Metro line A) is the closest. Tables are few: booking online or on +39 06 3610841 is recommended. Remember to check the opening dates before you go, as the terrace closes in high summer and during the winter.
