Mater Terrae: a vegetarian table above Piazza Navona
The roof of the Bio Hotel Raphaël
The Bio Hotel Raphaël, a member of Relais & Châteaux, stands on Largo Febo, a few steps from Piazza Navona. Its top floor is home to Mater Terrae, which brings together a fine dining restaurant, an indoor dining room with large windows and a bistro-bar, extended by a terrace on several levels, lined with potted palms and flowers.
Domes as far as the eye can see
From the terrace, the view sweeps over the rooftops of the historic centre: the dome of St Peter's on one side, the dome and bell towers of Sant'Agnese in Agone close by, and the Vittoriano further away. The place is particularly beautiful at the blue hour, when the tables are lit by candlelight and the monuments light up.
Organic, vegetarian and vegan cuisine
The restaurant focuses on organic and biodynamic produce, with a vegetarian menu rich in vegan options, which changes with the seasons. The wine list follows the same philosophy, with a selection of certified organic and biodynamic wines. For something simpler, the Bistrot Bar has its own menu and cocktails; expect around €20 to €25 per glass.
Practical information
The Bistrot Bar is open every day from noon to 11pm. The restaurant serves lunch from noon to 3pm and dinner from 7.30pm to 11pm (last orders at 2.30pm and 10pm). The terrace is used mainly in fine weather, with the indoor dining room taking over the rest of the time. Booking by phone with the hotel is recommended. There is no metro station close by: walk from Piazza Navona, the Pantheon or Campo de' Fiori.
