BestOfRooftop lists bars, restaurants and hotel bars set on a rooftop or on a high floor with a view. This page explains how we choose venues, how the editor's rating and the price level are calculated, and how to report an error.
Our selection criteria
To be included in our selection, a venue must meet all of the following conditions:
- it is genuinely high up: on a roof, a panoramic terrace or a high floor with a view. Street-level terraces are excluded;
- it is open to the public, not only to hotel guests or members of a private club;
- it is currently operating: closed venues and pop-ups that have disappeared are not listed. A seasonal rooftop is kept only if it reopens every year, and its listing says so;
- its details are cross-checked: the name, the address and the existence of the rooftop are each confirmed by at least two independent sources (official website, tourist office, press).
Facilities and services (pool, brunch, panoramic view, wheelchair access…) are only shown when a reliable source confirms them: if in doubt, we leave them out. Listing texts are written from this verified information. A rooftop suggested by a visitor or by a venue is published only after our team has approved it.
The editor's rating
Every listing shows an editor's rating out of 5. It is based on public customer reviews:
- we average the public ratings (out of 5) available on review platforms;
- this average is multiplied by 18 to give a score out of 100;
- the score is adjusted by 5 points depending on the view: +5 for an exceptional view, −5 for a modest one;
- the final score always stays between 50 and 90.
For display, the score is divided by 20 and rounded to the nearest half point, so the editor's rating ranges from 2.5 to 4.5 out of 5. For example, a public average of 4.4/5 gives a score of 79; with an exceptional view it rises to 84, shown as 4/5. When no reliable public rating is available, our editors assign a score within the same range and justify it from the verified information.
The editor's rating is separate from the reviews left by visitors on BestOfRooftop, which are shown separately after moderation. Venues cannot change it. The Premium subscription, marked with a “Premium Rooftop” badge, can place a listing at the top of lists but has no effect on the rating or on the selection criteria.
The price level
The price level, out of 5, is based on the price of a cocktail taken from the venue's menu or from a reliable source:
- up to €10: 2/5;
- €11 to €14: 3/5;
- €15 to €19: 4/5;
- €20 and above: 5/5.
Without a verifiable price, no price level is given.
How listings are updated
The listings of a city are checked again whenever that city is updated (new venues added, closures checked) and as soon as an error is reported to us. A venue that has closed for good is removed from the selection. The date of the last update is shown on every city page. Older listings, written before this method was formalised, are brought into line with these rules when they are updated. Opening hours, prices and entry conditions can change: please check them with the venue before you go.
Report an error or claim a listing
Spotted something inaccurate, or a venue that has closed? Email us at contact@bestofrooftop.com with the address of the page concerned: we will check and correct the listing.
Do you own or manage a listed venue? On its listing, click “Claim this listing”, log in or create an account, then enter your job title and business contact details. Every request is checked manually by our team; once approved, the listing is linked to your account and you can complete it. Your rooftop is not listed yet? Add it: it will be published after verification.
