Rooftops in Hamburg: the Hanseatic city seen from above
A city of water between the Elbe and the Alster
A free Hanseatic city, Hamburg is both a city and one of Germany's sixteen Länder. With more than 1.9 million inhabitants over 755 km², it is Germany's second-largest city after Berlin, and its port, some 110 km from where the Elbe flows into the North Sea, is the country's largest. The city is divided into seven boroughs, from the historic centre to the districts on the other side of the Elbe, such as Wilhelmsburg.
In the heart of the city, the Alster forms a lake in two basins: the Binnenalster, lined by the Jungfernstieg quay and overlooked by City Hall, and the larger Außenalster, where people stroll and go sailing. To the south, the Elbe and the port unfold their quays, from the Landungsbrücken in Sankt Pauli to HafenCity, the district that has been under construction since 2001 on former port land.
Spires, cranes and the Elbphilharmonie
Seen from above, Hamburg lines up the spires of its churches, the green roofs of City Hall, inaugurated in 1897, and the tower of the Michel, St Michael's Church, 132 metres high. Along the water, the neo-Gothic brick warehouses of the Speicherstadt, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015, lead to the Elbphilharmonie: the concert hall by Herzog & de Meuron, set on top of a former port warehouse and inaugurated in 2017, has become one of the city's emblems. Opposite, the cranes of the container port close off the horizon.
Where to get a view from above in Hamburg
The port and Sankt Pauli
At the start of the Reeperbahn, the Tanzende Türme are crowned by clouds, a restaurant and a bar on the 23rd floor topped by a roof terrace, the heaven's nest, which reopened at the end of May 2026 after a long closure. A little further west, Skyline Bar 20up occupies the 20th floor of the Empire Riverside Hotel, 90 metres up, behind tall picture windows. Above the Landungsbrücken, the Tower Bar of the Hotel Hafen Hamburg has been serving cocktails on the 12th floor since 1987, with a 360° view. Lower down, on the roof of the Landungsbrücken, BLOCKBRÄU sets up a vast terrace facing the ferries in fine weather.
The Elbphilharmonie and HafenCity
Inside the Elbphilharmonie, the BLICK Bar, on the 8th floor of The Westin hotel, looks out over the Elbe and HafenCity, ideal before or after a concert. Further east, the Puzzle Bar has taken up residence on the 15th floor of the Campus Tower, with a terrace that wraps around the whole floor and highly elaborate signature cocktails.
Around the Alster and Dammtor
On the eastern shore of the Außenalster, the Heritage Rooftop Bar, on the 9th floor of Le Méridien, opens onto the lake. Opposite, on the western shore, the Fontenay Bar occupies the 6th floor of The Fontenay hotel. Near Dammtor station, TWOSIX looks down over the city from the 26th floor of the Radisson Blu, 118 metres up.
Near the central station and beyond
A few minutes from the central station, the RoofDrop Bar, on the 12th floor of the Villa Viva hotel, combines an artist-designed room with a roof terrace.
Gastronomy and cocktails up high
Cocktails, gin and house-brewed beer
Hamburg's rooftops cater to every budget: beer brewed on site at BLOCKBRÄU, cocktails from €12 to €15 at the Tower Bar and from €13 to €16 at the RoofDrop Bar. In the hotel bars and mixology spots, expect to pay more like €15 to €20 (20up, clouds, Heritage, Puzzle Bar, BLICK Bar) and up to €22 for a signature cocktail at the Fontenay Bar. TWOSIX focuses on 26 gins and 26 wines, the Puzzle Bar on highly crafted creations, and clouds on seasonal cuisine with French accents.
Music and nights out
Several venues liven up their evenings: a DJ at weekends at clouds, afterwork events and DJ nights at the Heritage Rooftop Bar, live music from Thursday to Sunday at the Fontenay Bar. Most venues can also be booked privately for parties or corporate events.
A rooftop for every occasion
As a couple or with friends
For a tête-à-tête, the Fontenay Bar, 20up or the restaurant at clouds play the elegance card, with the port or the Alster lighting up as night falls. With friends, the RoofDrop Bar and the Heritage Rooftop Bar, which take no reservations, lend themselves to impromptu drinks, while BLOCKBRÄU suits large groups and families.
Getting around easily
Most rooftops can be reached by U-Bahn or S-Bahn. St. Pauli (U3) and Reeperbahn stations serve clouds and 20up, Landungsbrücken the Tower Bar and BLOCKBRÄU, Baumwall (U3) the Elbphilharmonie and HafenCity Universität (U4) the Puzzle Bar. Dammtor station is a stone's throw from TWOSIX, and the central station from the RoofDrop Bar.
Tips for making the most of Hamburg's rooftops
Choosing your season and time
Hamburg's climate makes several terraces seasonal: the heaven's nest at clouds operates from April or May to October, in fine weather. 20up, the Tower Bar and the BLICK Bar, fully glazed, stay open all year round, as do the indoor rooms of the Heritage Rooftop Bar, TWOSIX, the Fontenay Bar, the Puzzle Bar and the RoofDrop Bar. Opening hours vary by day and by season: check before you go, and arrive early in the evening to watch the sun set over the Elbe.
