Tower Bar: a 360-degree classic above the port
The tower of the Hotel Hafen Hamburg
On the hill overlooking the Landungsbrücken, Sankt Pauli's historic landing stages, stands the Hotel Hafen Hamburg. On the 12th floor of its tower, 62 metres up, is a small bar that opened in 1987 and has become a Hamburg institution. Renovated in 2015, it has kept the atmosphere of a hushed lounge: a gilded pyramid ceiling, a crystal chandelier, leather armchairs and an old ship's figurehead.
An all-round view of the port
The windows run around the entire room. On one side, the Elbe, the docks and the gantry cranes of the container port; on the other, the Elbphilharmonie, the rooftops of the Neustadt and the spire of the Michel. Sunset over the river and the cranes is a lovely time to come.
A long cocktail menu
The menu lists more than forty cocktails, from classics such as the margarita or the old fashioned to the house's maritime creations, like the Harbour Spritz or the St. Pauli Killer with its six rums, priced between €12 and €15. For a taste of Hamburg in miniature, the “Lüttes Gedeck” brings together four local liqueurs on a small board (€19). Only drinks and snacks are served. Occasional themed evenings and a New Year's Eve celebration with a view of the fireworks.
Practical information
Open Sunday to Thursday from 6pm to 1am, Friday and Saturday from 6pm to 2am. The room is small and takes only a few reservations, so arriving early is advisable. The top floor is reached by a staircase from the 11th: no wheelchair access. Cards accepted from €25. No dogs allowed. U-Bahn and S-Bahn Landungsbrücken, at the foot of the hill.
