On the roof of the Humboldt Forum, the rebuilt palace facing the Museumsinsel, Baret serves from morning until midnight in a glass pavilion that extends onto a terrace. At a height of 30 metres, the Berliner Dom, the Fernsehturm and the Brandenburg Gate form the backdrop to a café by day and a restaurant by night.

Baret: dinner on the roof of the Humboldt Forum

A glass pavilion above the Museumsinsel

In the heart of Mitte, the Humboldt Forum occupies the rebuilt Berlin Palace on Schloßplatz, opposite the Museumsinsel. Its roof, around 30 metres up, is home to a large panoramic terrace and Baret, a restaurant set in a glass pavilion. Its name pays tribute to Jeanne Baret, an 18th-century naturalist and probably the first woman to circumnavigate the globe.

From the dining rooms and the west- and north-facing terrace, the view takes in the Berliner Dom, the Museumsinsel, Gendarmenmarkt, Alexanderplatz and the Fernsehturm, all the way to the Brandenburg Gate. On a clear day, you can see far beyond the city centre.

From croissants to dinner

During the day Baret works as a café, with pastries, homemade cakes and small plates to share, before becoming a restaurant. The cooking, which favours regional produce, reinvents classics with fish, meat or in vegetarian and vegan versions; expect €16 to €29 for a starter and €34 to €45 for a main course. From 6pm, a menu of house cocktails takes over, mostly €15 to €17, alongside a selection of natural wines. The lounge and the restaurant can be hired for events.

Practical information

The restaurant is open from 11am to midnight, except on Tuesdays. With a booking at Baret, access to the roof is free: just show your confirmation at the lift. Without a booking, you need a terrace ticket (€3), valid during the terrace's opening hours: until 6.30pm, or 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays; it is best to book it online. The lift leaves from the Treppenhalle and the roof is wheelchair accessible. In the event of storms, snow or ice, the terrace may close. U-Bahn: Museumsinsel (U5), right next door; buses 100 and 300, Lustgarten stop.
