Zur Libelle: the MuseumsQuartier's rooftop bar
MQ Libelle, on the roof of the Leopold Museum
The MuseumsQuartier, which brings together museums and cultural venues in the former imperial stables, has a terrace on the roof of the Leopold Museum: MQ Libelle, recognisable by its large metal rings. A lift goes up from the courtyard. At around 25 metres high, the terrace overlooks the MuseumsQuartier courtyard, Maria-Theresien-Platz and the twin domes of the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Natural History Museum, with the rooftops of the centre as a backdrop and the Vienna Woods in the distance.
A simple, well-thought-out bar
On this terrace, the Zur Libelle bar serves a selection of wines, cocktails, craft beers and refined bites. The menu is deliberately short and suited to the setting: people come for an aperitif, a break after an exhibition or a sunset drink, sitting on the benches, leaning on a high table or settled on the terrace.
A seasonal spot
The bar operates in the warmer months, generally from mid-April to late October; it is closed from November to February and in bad weather. The terrace, open to the public, is very popular on summer evenings: it's best to book a table if you're coming as a group.
