A Caribbean terrace above Coconut Grove
In the heart of Coconut Grove, the Mayfair House Hotel & Garden hides Sipsip on its roof, a “calypso rum bar” with Caribbean flair. The decor is sunny: scalloped orange umbrellas, mosaic tables, woven armchairs, tropical plants, a carved white fireplace and a floral mural behind the bar. The terrace looks out over the rooftops and towers of Coconut Grove, with a glimpse of Biscayne Bay to the east. The adjacent pool is mostly reserved for hotel guests; cabanas can be booked, and there's a pool party on Sunday afternoons.
Rum, frozen cocktails and fried fish
The rum list is long, and the cocktails, at $18, go all in on the tropics: the Sipsip Hurricane with rum and mezcal, the Guava Breeze with guava, an old fashioned made with Appleton 8-year rum, or rum-free creations with vodka, bourbon or tequila. The frozen piña colada costs $16, draft beers $10 and a fresh coconut, which you can spike with rum, $19. On the food side, the menu riffs on South Florida fish shacks: conch fritters, corvina ceviche, fish and chips, shrimp tacos or a Cuban steak sandwich.
Practical information
Open Sunday through Thursday from 11am to 10pm, and Friday and Saturday from 11am to midnight. Happy hour on weekdays from 7pm to 9pm. Card payments only, and an 18% service charge is added to the bill. Access is through the hotel, at 3000 Florida Avenue; the Coconut Grove Metrorail station is about 1.3 km away.
