Rooftops in Porto: the city of the Douro seen from above

A city in tiers above the river

Portugal's second-largest urban area after Lisbon and capital of the Norte region, Porto was built on the steep slopes of the right bank of the Douro, not far from its mouth. Opposite, on the left bank, Vila Nova de Gaia lines up the cellars of the great port wine houses, which have made the city famous throughout the world.

The historic centre, with the Ribeira district whose colourful houses rise in tiers down to the quay, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, together with the Dom Luís I Bridge and the Serra do Pilar Monastery. Built between 1881 and 1886 by Théophile Seyrig, a former partner of Gustave Eiffel, the bridge links the two banks on two levels: the road below, the metro and pedestrians above.

Bell towers, tiled roofs and an Atlantic horizon

Seen from above, Porto reveals a sea of orange roofs, dotted with bell towers and domes. The Clérigos Tower, 76 metres high and completed in 1763, still dominates the centre. To the west, the Douro flows towards the Atlantic beneath the Arrábida Bridge, and on fine evenings the sun sets straight into the ocean.

Baixa and Aliados: the roofs of the centre

In the heart of the lower town, several venues offer a balcony over the rooftops. A stone's throw from the Bolhão Market, 17º Restaurante & Bar occupies the 17th floor of the Hotel Dom Henrique Downtown, some 150 metres above sea level, with a restaurant, a bar and a glazed terrace. Near Trindade station, Terraço do Jardim sets out a glass-walled dining room and a flower-filled terrace on the 5th floor of the Vincci Bonjardim hotel, while Nine Rooftop, opened in 2024 on the 9th floor of the YOTEL Porto, faces the metro. A short walk from Avenida dos Aliados, The Social Hub Porto opened a rooftop on the 8th floor in summer 2025, with a bar, tiered seating and a pool reserved for hotel guests.

Along the Douro: Miragaia and Massarelos

On the river side, two terraces look out over the Douro and the Gaia bank. On the heights of Miragaia, an extension of the Ribeira, Amura combines an indoor bar and an open-air rooftop lounge at the top of the Timbre Virtudes hotel. Further west, on the roof of the Vincci Porto, a former fish market set on the water's edge, Douro Sky Lounge faces the Arrábida Bridge from April to October.

Boavista and Foz: all the way to the ocean

For the widest views, head up to the 19th floor of the Porto Palácio Hotel, on Avenida da Boavista: behind its picture windows, Auge Porto brings together a restaurant, a wine cellar and a cocktail bar, with 360-degree views of the city, from the Douro to the Atlantic.

Gastronomy and cocktails up high

Petiscos, port wine and chef's cuisine

On Porto's rooftops, the food remains Portuguese above all. Petiscos to share, alheira croquettes, peixinhos da horta, cheese and charcuterie boards, sit alongside more ambitious menus focused on Atlantic produce. Port wine is everywhere: by the glass, as a porto tónico or in signature cocktails, with Auge Porto even making it the heart of its bar. Cocktails usually cost around €10 to €15.

Music and nights out

Several venues liven up their evenings: DJs and concerts on the roof of The Social Hub Porto, sunset parties at Douro Sky Lounge, themed nights at Nine Rooftop, live music and summer barbecues at Terraço do Jardim. Some can also be booked privately for events, with the city as a backdrop.

A rooftop for every occasion

As a couple or with friends

For a dinner for two, the glass-walled dining rooms of Auge Porto or 17º offer an intimate setting, with the illuminated city as a backdrop. With friends, the festive atmosphere of Nine Rooftop, the Social Hub or Douro Sky Lounge lends itself better to drinks that stretch on, while Amura plays the card of calm facing the river.

At the weekend or with colleagues

Terraço do Jardim serves brunch on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Companies are well catered for too: 17º hosts birthday parties and corporate cocktail receptions, Auge Porto offers an executive lunch menu, and several terraces can be booked privately for team evenings.

Getting around easily

The metro serves most of the rooftops in the centre: Trindade, Bolhão and Aliados for the Baixa, Casa da Música for Boavista. Along the river, historic tram no. 1 links the centre to Foz, passing near the Vincci Porto, a pleasant way to go from one viewpoint to another.

Tips for making the most of Porto's rooftops

Choosing your season and time

Most of Porto's rooftops are open all year round, often with a glass-walled room for grey days, but some terraces are seasonal, such as Douro Sky Lounge, which reopens every spring. Opening hours change with the seasons and some venues only open in the late afternoon: it is best to check before you go. To catch the sunset over the Douro or the ocean, arriving in the early evening and booking when possible is still the best strategy.
