Taratsa: Greek-Levantine cuisine facing the Acropolis
A hidden roof above Mitropoleos Street
Nothing at number 60 Mitropoleos Street hints at what lies at the very top of the Regal hotel. Opened in 2024, the “Athenian Taratsa”, as its Greek sign says, occupies the roof of the building between Monastiraki and Syntagma: a green pergola, string lights, orange banquettes, dark marble tables and a large wooden counter.
Opposite the tables, the Acropolis rises above the tiled roofs of Plaka; on the other side, the view stretches over the rooftops of the centre to the mountains that close off the horizon. Behind the bar, a mirror reflects the image of the rock.
Wood fire, robata and Levantine cocktails
In the middle of the terrace is an open kitchen with a wood-fired oven and a robata grill. Chef Alexandros Karakatsanis blends Greek cuisine with flavours of the Levant: vine leaves with beef tartare, kebab, charcoal-grilled fish, shawarma. Expect €40 to €60 per person.
The cocktails, at €13, give a twist to recipes from the region: a Tabouleh with Greek gin, a Fattoush with tsipouro, a Kaimaki Ice Cream with mastiha. The wine list favours Greek vineyards. The roof can be booked privately for weddings, parties or corporate events, for up to 75 people seated or 120 standing.
