Retiré: a rooftop bar facing the Acropolis, above Ergon House
The roof of a hotel for food lovers
On Mitropoleos Street, between Syntagma Square and Monastiraki, Ergon House brings together a hotel, a restaurant and a kind of modern agora: greengrocer, butcher, fishmonger, coffee roastery and delicatessen under one roof. At the very top, Retiré has been the house bar since 2019, open to everyone and not just hotel guests.
The decor evokes a beach in the middle of the city: gravel floor, canvas deckchairs, poufs, string lights, shade nets and a small bar truck, all surrounded by olive trees and plants. Straight ahead, above the rooftops of the historic centre, stands the Acropolis, coloured by the setting sun before the Parthenon lights up.
Greek cocktails and wood-fired flatbreads
The bar team makes cocktails every day from local ingredients: Chios mastiha, fruit from the market, spirits produced in Greece, fresh herbs. The menu also includes Greek wines and craft beers. To go with the drinks, house-made flatbreads are baked in an open-fire oven, then topped according to the season.
The roof can also host corporate events, on request from the hotel.
Practical information
Retiré is seasonal: it opens from April to October, generally every day from 5pm to midnight. The bar does not take reservations and works on a walk-in basis only, except for hotel guests: it is best to arrive early for the sunset. Casual dress. Syntagma metro (lines 2 and 3) is about a five-minute walk away.
