Rooftops in Lyon: the city between two rivers seen from above

A landscape made for panoramas

Few French cities lend themselves to contemplation as much as Lyon. France's third most populous city, it grew up at the confluence of the Rhône and the Saône, between two hills that shape its landscape: Fourvière, the “hill that prays”, crowned by its basilica, and the Croix-Rousse, the “hill that works”, the former district of the canuts, Lyon's silk workers.

Between the two rivers stretches the Presqu'île, with place Bellecour, the Opéra and the Hôtel de Ville. On the right bank of the Saône, Vieux-Lyon lines up its Renaissance façades at the foot of Fourvière. Vieux-Lyon, the Fourvière hill, the Presqu'île and the slopes of the Croix-Rousse make up the historic site that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998.

From red roofs to the towers of Part-Dieu

Seen from above, Lyon reveals a sea of tiled roofs, dotted with bell towers and domes. To the east, the Part-Dieu business district raises its towers, including the famous Crayon and the To-Lyon, which peaks at 171 metres. To the south, Confluence, a district transformed from former port and industrial land, blends contemporary architecture with redeveloped riverbanks. On clear days, the Alps appear on the horizon.

Where to get a view from above in Lyon

Presqu'île: rooftops in the heart of the city

Right in the centre, several venues offer a balcony over Lyon's monuments. On the seventh floor of the Opéra, Les Muses de l'Opéra faces the Hôtel de Ville and Fourvière, with a budget-friendly menu. Close by, Le Rooftop Maison Nô combines a glass roof and a terrace on the top floor of a former bank. On the banks of the Rhône, Le Melhor welcomes guests on the eighth floor of the Sofitel Lyon Bellecour, behind wide picture windows.

Confluence: rooftops along the water

South of the Presqu'île, Confluence is home to the liveliest rooftop terraces. On the roof of La Sucrière, Le Sucre alternates aperitifs, concerts and electronic nights above the Saône. On quai Rambaud, the leafy rooftop of the MOB Hotel Lyon Confluence plays the conviviality card, while the Gourmet Bar Lyon Confluence opens its large terrace onto the quays. On the Rhône side, The Lift opened in 2026 as a cocktail and tapas bar on the eighth floor of a building on quai Perrache.

Part-Dieu and Fourvière: the heights

For the most spectacular views, two venues stand out. On the 32nd floor of the Tour Part-Dieu, Celest offers fine dining around 150 metres above the ground, with the whole city behind its picture windows. On the Fourvière hill, Le Rooftop Têtedoie tops chef Christian Têtedoie's house with a summer terrace overlooking Vieux-Lyon and the Presqu'île.

Gastronomy and cocktails up high

From chefs' tables to sharing plates

Lyon's gastronomic reputation extends to its rooftops. The city's rooftops cover the whole spectrum, from chefs' menus served facing the panorama to boards, tapas and pizzas to share with friends. Seasonal cocktails, wines by the glass and local beers accompany these moments up high, at prices ranging from the down-to-earth bar to the exceptional restaurant.

Music and nights out

Many of these venues liven up their evenings with live jazz, DJ sets, electronic aperitifs or cultural programming. Some can also be hired for corporate events or parties, with the city as a backdrop.

A rooftop for every occasion

As a couple or with friends

For a dinner for two, the glass-walled dining rooms of Celest or the hushed lounge of Le Melhor offer an intimate setting with the illuminated city as a backdrop. For an evening with friends, the electric atmosphere of Le Sucre, the aperitifs on quai Perrache or the Opéra terrace are better suited to drinks that go on into the night.

With family or colleagues

Some venues are happy to welcome families, such as the MOB Hotel or the Gourmet Bar, which offer a children's menu. Companies are well catered for too: several rooftops can be hired for drinks receptions, seminars or team evenings, from the top floor of Maison Nô to the flexible spaces of Le Sucre and The Lift.

Getting around easily

Most of Lyon's rooftops are served by public transport: the metro for the Presqu'île and Perrache, tram T1 for Part-Dieu and Confluence, and the funicular to reach the heights of Fourvière from Vieux-Lyon. A great way to hop from one viewpoint to the next without worrying about parking.

Tips for making the most of Lyon's rooftops

Choosing your season and time

Some of Lyon's rooftops are seasonal and open from spring to autumn, while others, sheltered by picture windows or a glass roof, can be visited all year round. Opening hours often change with the seasons, so it is best to check them before you go. To catch the sunset over Fourvière or the Rhône, arriving early in the evening is still the best strategy, especially as some terraces do not take reservations and draw crowds from the first sunny days.
