Cubita: a taste of Havana above Mission Street
El Techo's successor
For nearly thirteen years, the roof of 2516 Mission Street was home to El Techo, a go-to after-work spot for the neighborhood. The same restaurant group closed it in spring 2025 to turn it into a Cuban bar, which opened as early as June. An elevator takes you up to the roof, where the view of the downtown skyline is still there, now framed by wrought-iron grilles, pink shutters, a black-and-white checkerboard floor and a large mural of a gorilla smoking a cigar next to an American car. Most of the rooftop is covered and heated, so it can be enjoyed year-round; a sweater is still a good idea on foggy evenings.
Rum, salsa and Caribbean flavors
The bar puts rum front and center: the mojito and Cuba Libre at $13, the Hemingway daiquiri or El Presidente at $15, the Qué Bola with mezcal and pisco topped with tangerine foam at $15, and the Havana Heat, served with a flaming cinnamon stick, at $20. Pitchers and punch bowls are for sharing among four or more. On the plate: ropa vieja empanadas, fried yuca, tostones, Caribbean ceviche and Cuban sandwiches. DJs, a dance floor, a photo booth and salsa on Sundays, in partnership with a Cuban cultural organization, keep the energy up.
The rooftop can be booked privately for a birthday, a team happy hour or a reception.
Practical information
Closed Monday; open Tuesday through Thursday from 5pm to 10pm, Friday from 5pm to midnight, Saturday from 11am to midnight and Sunday from 11am to 10pm, with brunch on weekends. Happy hour Tuesday through Friday from 5pm to 6:30pm. Reservations are recommended; walk-ins are welcome as space allows. The 24th Street Mission BART station is about 500 meters away, and 16th Street Mission is less than a kilometer away.
