KAIYŌ Rooftop: Nikkei flavors on the 12th floor
A tropical terrace near the ballpark
KAIYŌ restaurant occupies the hotel's ground floor, on 3rd Street; for the rooftop, an elevator goes straight up to the 12th floor. Up top, everything happens in the open air, including the dining area: a long green-tiled bar under a wooden awning, banquettes, plants galore, a pop-art mural and a big screen showing beach and waterfall scenes. The view runs from the Giants' ballpark to the downtown skyscrapers and all the way to the Bay Bridge, and sunset here is especially popular. Since the weather changes quickly in San Francisco, the venue has installed heaters and windscreens, recommends dressing in layers and may cancel reservations in case of strong wind or rain.
Pisco, matcha and ceviches
The cocktails, $18 to $20, blend Japanese and Peruvian influences: the Cobra with Roku gin, matcha coconut cream and aji amarillo bitters, a classic pisco sour, and the Mango Mambo, made with mezcal and topped with cava. To snack on: ceviches with leche de tigre, oysters, vegetable gyozas, chicken karaage, beef empanadas or wagyu sliders, from $6 to $48 a plate. On Saturday and Sunday, brunch is served from 11am to 3pm.
Halloween and Día de los Muertos are celebrated with special events, and the rooftop also hosts groups and corporate events.
Practical information
Open Monday from 4pm to 11pm, Tuesday through Thursday from 4pm to midnight, Friday from 4pm to 1am, Saturday from 11am to 1am and Sunday from 11am to 11pm. Happy hour Monday through Friday from 4pm to 6pm, except on Giants home game days. Online reservations are recommended at peak times. The 2nd & King stop (Muni Metro N line) is about 100 meters away, and the 4th & King Caltrain station is 350 meters away.
