Café Madrid Rooftop: Agua de Valencia on the rooftops
A terrace above a legendary bar
On the small calle de l'Abadia de Sant Martí, between Plaza del Ayuntamiento and the Palace of the Marqués de Dos Aguas, Café Madrid is one of the best-known bars in Valencia: according to the establishment and the tourist office, this is where Agua de Valencia was born, a mix of orange juice, cava and spirits. The MYR Hotels group, which runs the Marqués House hotel in the same building, has opened its roof to the public under the name Café Madrid Rooftop.
The terrace, with its white walls and rattan furniture, is on a human scale. It offers an unobstructed view over the roofs of the historic centre, the nearby bell towers and the Palace of the Marqués de Dos Aguas, with its famous Baroque façade.
Cocktails and small plates
The menu is short: the “original recipe” Agua de Valencia at €13, spritzes, a mojito, a Moscow Mule or a Paloma at €13 to €15, two alcohol-free cocktails, a few beers, wines by the glass and champagnes. To eat, there are things to nibble on: almonds, olives, gilda, garrofó hummus, Russian salad with tuna, or a board of Iberian ham and sheep's cheese.
Practical information
The terrace opens every day from 4pm to 10pm, making it a spot for aperitifs and sunsets rather than late nights. You don't need to be a hotel guest; for reservations, the venue can be reached by phone. Colón metro (lines 3, 5, 7 and 9) is about 500 metres away; Plaza del Ayuntamiento and the Central Market are a few minutes' walk away.
