The Hidden Rooftop: a lofty lounge facing the castle

The roof of the Independente, at the top of the Bairro Alto

The Independente occupies two late 19th-century palaces on Rua de São Pedro de Alcântara, directly opposite the famous viewpoint. Its top floor, long home to the Insólito bar, has been taken over by the Paradigma group under the name The Hidden Rooftop. It forms the second part of Gandaia Club, whose restaurant, The Decadent Restaurant, is on the ground floor.

The decor plays the relaxed card: large sofas, floor cushions, antique rugs, velvet stools and small vintage pieces of furniture, under a shade sail dotted with chandeliers. Over the parapet, the view stretches across the hill of São Jorge Castle, the rooftops of the Baixa and the Tagus estuary.

Signature cocktails and events

At the end of the day, cocktails take centre stage: classics and house creations, accompanied by a selection of wines chosen for the golden hour. The regular programme mixes DJ sets, yoga classes and other events announced on the venue's Instagram account. The rooftop can also be booked for private events.

For dinner, the ground-floor restaurant offers straightforward cooking in which grilling takes centre stage, enlivened with spices.
