REM: dinner and cocktails on a former pirate platform
A story from the North Sea
The REM-eiland was built as a platform in the North Sea, nine kilometres off the coast of Noordwijk. In 1964, it was used for illegal television broadcasts. Since 2011, the structure has stood in the Nieuwe Houthaven, the former timber port in the west of Amsterdam, where it rises on its stilts above the water. Painted red and white, it has four levels.
A glass-walled bar above the water
On arrival, you first discover the bar, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows. The view takes in the IJ, the barges and passing ships, and the Amsterdam skyline. People come here for a pre-dinner drink, a signature cocktail or the house smashburger. The restaurant serves seasonal cuisine, à la carte or as a four- or five-course chef’s menu.
The roof, the platform’s highest point
At the very top, the roof terrace combines the raw architecture of the offshore platform, open-air spaces and panoramic views. During the summer months, it hosts sunset dinners, cocktails, live music and events. A private, wind-sheltered terrace next to the bar can be rented for dinners and receptions.
