Horto: a hanging garden above Cordusio
The roof of The Medelan
A stone's throw from piazza Cordusio, The Medelan building houses the restaurant Horto on its sixth floor. A dedicated lift, from 5 via San Protaso, leads to a bright dining room opened up by large picture windows, then to a terrace laid out like a garden, among grasses, flowers and pale stone paths. From here, Milan can be taken in at a single glance: the dome of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II and the spires of the Duomo close by, the Torre Velasca, the towers of CityLife and Porta Nuova, the Castello Sforzesco and, on clear days, Monte Rosa on the horizon.
Starred, locally sourced cuisine
In 2024, Horto earned a Michelin star and the Green Star, which rewards sustainable practices. Its rule, known as “L'Ora Etica”, is simple: no ingredient comes from more than an hour's drive away. From this come two tasting menus of three, five or seven courses, one of them plant-based. Expect to pay €145 to €185 depending on the menu.
Breakfast and aperitivo on the roof
The venue is not just about dinner. From Monday to Saturday, breakfast is served from 8.30am to 11am, and the aperitivo starts at 6.30pm, with house cocktails built around fermentations and infusions, accompanied by small plates from the kitchen, from €15 to €20.
Practical information
Horto is closed on Sundays. Lunch is served Monday to Friday, dinner Monday to Saturday. The aperitivo is served on the terrace from May to October, and at the indoor bar for the rest of the year. Booking is recommended, online or by phone. Getting there: Cordusio metro station (line M1), three minutes' walk away; parking is recommended at piazza Filippo Meda.
To see Milan from above in a leafy setting, Horto offers a terrace like no other in the city centre.
