The top of The Fontenay
In the Rotherbaum district, not far from Pöseldorf, The Fontenay raises its white, rounded volumes on the shore of the Außenalster, amid a neighbourhood of villas. The bar occupies the 6th floor: a hushed room with colourful velvet armchairs and a long bar counter beneath pendant lights, surrounded by picture windows and extended by a terrace. From here, the panorama, billed as 320 degrees, takes in the lake and its sailing boats, the opposite shore, the skyline of the city centre and its church spires.
In summer, guests settle on the terrace; the rest of the year, the picture windows offer the same view under cover. In the evening, the sunset and the city lights take over.
A globetrotting cocktail menu
The 2026 menu pays tribute to John Fontenay, the 19th-century ship broker and merchant who gave the venue its name: nine cocktails, each inspired by an Asian port city and built around a local ingredient, such as Shanghai jasmine or Singapore pandan, all at €22. There are also long drinks and highballs, a long wine list, caviar and light bites, including a burger. From Thursday to Sunday, musicians play live from 6.30pm to 11pm.
Practical information
Open every day from 3pm, until midnight Sunday to Thursday and until 1am on Friday and Saturday. The bar does not take table reservations: guests are seated as space becomes available. Open to outside guests as well as hotel guests; no dogs allowed. Smart dress is expected in this luxury hotel. Access via the hotel lobby, Fontenay 10; Dammtor station is about a fifteen-minute walk away.
