Gro Spiseri: dinner on a rooftop farm
A farm above Østerbro
Nothing from the street hints at what lies at the top of this ordinary Østerbro building, a former car auction house. You have to climb the spiral staircase attached to the façade to discover ØsterGRO, Denmark's first urban rooftop farm, launched in 2014: vegetable beds, flowers, herbs and beehives, with views over the neighbourhood's rooftops.
A large communal table in the greenhouse
In the middle of the crops, Gro Spiseri sets up its restaurant in a cosy greenhouse, heated by the oven in the small kitchen corner. A single long table of around twenty seats brings the diners together, and conversation flows readily from one end to the other. The menu follows the seasons: organic produce from local farms, sustainably caught fish, herbs, flowers and honey harvested on site, with a selection of wines, locally brewed beers and craft juices.
All year round
Thanks to winter cabbages, strawberry plants and hardy herbs, the farm stays alive in every season, and the restaurant opens all year round, with Christmas dinners on the roof in winter. In fine weather, dinner often ends with a superb sunset. Farm tours, workshops and private events are also offered.
