CopenHill Rooftop Café: a drink at the top of Copenhagen's “mountain”
A plant turned mountain
On the island of Amager, east of the centre, the Amager Bakke waste-to-energy plant has become one of the symbols of the city. Designed by Bjarke Ingels' firm BIG, its sloping roof has been home since autumn 2019 to CopenHill: a ski and snowboard slope on an artificial surface, a hiking trail that climbs to the summit and a climbing wall on the façade. From its 85-metre top, the view over Copenhagen is unobstructed.
The Rooftop Café, at 78 metres
As soon as you step out of the lift, 78 metres above the ground, the Rooftop Café sets out its tables on a covered but open-air terrace. The view takes in the water, the harbour and its wind turbines, the rooftops of Copenhagen and, on clear days, Sweden. It serves hot and cold drinks, wine and beer, toasted sandwiches and pizzas, ice creams and waffles depending on the season, and snacks all year round. The atmosphere is calm and family-friendly, far from the après-ski of the Ski Café at the foot of the slope.
An unusual spot for the whole family
Access to the summit is free during opening hours, whether you go up by the trail or by lift, and the visit can be combined with a ski run or a walk on the roof. The café can also be booked privately for birthdays or corporate events.
