Daintree: the Empire State Building right across the way

A canopy on the 29th floor

Parched Hospitality Group set up Daintree on the top floor of the Hotel Hendricks, on West 38th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. An elevator takes you up to the 29th floor, into a room of about 180 seats overgrown with potted plants and vines and wrapped in big windows. Thanks to its southern exposure, the Empire State Building stands right across from you, just a few blocks away, with Lower Manhattan on the horizon.

Outside, The Treetop, a terrace with about 70 seats, stays open year-round to walk-in guests. It isn't huge: on chilly or rainy days, you can take in the view just as well from the banquettes behind the glass. The same group runs a second, separate Daintree on the Lower East Side.

One-price cocktails and bar food

Every cocktail is the same price, $20: a house blood orange spritz, a sugar snap pea piña colada, a Japanese whisky and yuzu sake highball, a pisco cocktail or a cold brew espresso martini. To go with them, the bar food menu mixes oysters and scallops by the piece, tuna crudo, beef tartare, burrata, sliders, shrimp rolls and a charcuterie board. The space can also be booked for private events.

Practical information

Daintree is open daily, from late afternoon on weekdays and earlier on weekends; hours vary from day to day. Reservations are recommended for indoor seating through the website; the terrace is walk-in only. Take the B, D, F or M train to 42nd Street–Bryant Park or the 7 train to 5th Avenue, about a five-minute walk away.
