Broken Shaker: a beachy vibe above Downtown
The Freehand's rooftop pool
The Freehand Los Angeles is housed in the Commercial Exchange Building, built in 1924 on West 8th Street, between the Jewelry District and the Financial District. Its roof, on the 14th level, is home to Broken Shaker, the L.A. outpost of an award-winning cocktail bar that also has locations in other U.S. cities. Around a pool lined with pink lounge chairs, the terrace tables, tropical plants and wooden bar topped with an awning look straight out at the skyscrapers of Downtown, especially beautiful at sunset.
House cocktails and small plates
The menu focuses on colorful cocktails made with house syrups and infusions: tequila, mezcal, rum or gin meet passion fruit, watermelon or lychee, all at the same price of $17. Mocktails are $14, and some cocktails come in large shareable formats for two or four people. For groups of at least six, a punch bowl ($150) is built to order: choose your spirit, fruit and botanical. On the food side, a short snack menu goes with the drinks.
Every day from 4pm to 7pm, a happy hour called “La Piscina” livens up the late afternoon. Groups of fifteen or more can host an event on site.
Practical information
Open daily from noon to midnight; the kitchen is open from noon to 7pm Sunday through Thursday and until 10pm on Friday and Saturday. Online reservations are available, and walk-ins are welcome. To sit around the pool, non-hotel guests must spend at least $65 per person, with a two-hour limit. 7th Street/Metro Center station (A, B, D and E lines) is about 500 meters away.
