In the heart of Downtown, in the Bunker Hill neighborhood, stands the U.S. Bank Tower. Its 71st floor, nearly 300 meters above the streets, is taken up entirely by 71Above, a fine-dining restaurant wrapped in floor-to-ceiling windows. On a clear day, the view stretches from Malibu all the way to Orange County, across the Los Angeles Basin; at night, the city turns into a carpet of lights. The floor brings together a bar, a lounge called the SkyLounge, the main dining room, a chef's table facing the open kitchen, and private dining rooms.

A three-course menu and neighborhood cocktails

In the evening, the dining room runs on a three-course menu: each course offers several dishes to choose from, arranged from lightest to most filling. The cooking is seasonal American: grilled octopus, pork loin with speck, cuts of beef. At the bar, the cocktail menu pays tribute to the region's neighborhoods, from the Hollywood, made with jalapeño-infused vodka, to the Downtown, with toasted-hazelnut bourbon, cognac and apricot liqueur, at $20 each; nonalcoholic cocktails are $19. Tuesday through Friday from 4pm to 6pm, “Golden Hour” in the bar and lounge offers $14 cocktails, $12 wine by the glass and small plates.

Practical information

Dinner is served Sunday through Thursday from 5pm to 9pm, and Friday and Saturday from 5pm to 10pm. Reservations, which require a credit card, are mandatory for the dining room; the bar welcomes walk-ins as space allows. Window tables can't be guaranteed. The dress code is smart casual: jackets are recommended, and hats, caps, shorts, sweatpants, heavily ripped jeans, flip-flops and athletic wear are not allowed. Valet parking from 5pm in front of the tower; Metro: Pershing Square station (B and D lines), about 400 m away.
