Skybar Malabar: a tropical bar above the IJ
At the tip of Java Island
In the former eastern docklands, the Oostelijk Havengebied, the Hotel Jakarta stands at the tip of Java Island, on the banks of the IJ. This WestCord group hotel focuses on sustainable construction and houses an indoor subtropical garden. Its top two floors, the 8th and 9th, are home to Skybar Malabar.
The bar is arranged around a wood-clad central counter, surrounded by armchairs and low tables lined up along the picture windows. The view takes in the IJ, the comings and goings of boats and the redeveloped quays of the eastern docks; after dark, the city lights are reflected in the water.
Cocktails with Indonesian flavours
Like the hotel's name, the menu echoes Indonesia. It features creations such as the Bandoeng Jungle, the arrack-based Arrack Sour, the Java Mule or a Dutch Negroni, “volcano” cocktails served with a touch of showmanship, several house gin and tonics and mocktails. The glassware, often unusual, is part of the show.
A no-reservations spot
Malabar does not take reservations: just turn up, preferably early to enjoy the sunset over the water. The bar is indoors, which makes it a pleasant option all year round.
