A monastery turned hotel
The Hotel San Francesco al Monte is housed in a 16th-century monastery along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, between the Quartieri Spagnoli and the San Martino hill. Corridors, frescoes and former monastic spaces have been preserved, in dialogue with a collection of modern and contemporary art. On the fourth floor, La Terrazza dei Barbanti is a panoramic restaurant open to non-residents, extended by a tiled terrace where plants in terracotta jars line the balustrade.
From Vesuvius to the port
The terrace overlooks the historic centre: the eye glides over the rooftops to the port and the bay, with Vesuvius opposite and the hills of the Sorrento Peninsula in the distance. In the evening, the silhouette of the volcano stands out above the city lights. Higher still, the hotel's roof garden offers a full panorama, from Capri to the Certosa di San Martino and the Castel Sant'Elmo.
Neapolitan cuisine and piano bar
The cuisine reinterprets the local culinary tradition with a modern touch, in an elegant setting where the view takes centre stage. The terrace bar, with its piano, comfortable sofas and selection of wines from the cellar, is a popular spot for an aperitivo. From mid-May to the end of September, lunch is served at the very top, at the Il Vigneto restaurant, under the pergolas of vines and citrus trees in the roof garden, next to the hotel's swimming pool, carved into the tuff.

The restaurant serves dinner all year round from 7.30pm to 10.30pm, and lunch from 12.30pm to 2.30pm from 26 September to 14 May; booking is required, by phone on +39 081 423 9111 or online. The bar is open every day from 5pm to midnight, and from 10.30am from October to mid-May. Il Vigneto serves lunch from 12.30pm to 3pm from 15 May to 25 September. The C16 bus stops in front of the hotel, and the Corso Vittorio Emanuele stops on the Centrale funicular and the Montesanto funicular are 300 and 400 metres away respectively.
