701 Rooftop Bar: a lounge perched opposite the Duomo
A hotel suite turned bar
The bar takes its name from suite 701 of the Gallery Hotel Art, a Lungarno Collection hotel tucked away in a quiet little courtyard between the Arno and the historic centre. This former top-floor suite has been completely redesigned to house a bar open to everyone, whether or not you are staying at the hotel. The interior draws on English clubs: warm wood, banquettes, leather armchairs, a counter dressed in cane webbing and subdued lighting.
On each side of the lounge, two open-air terraces extend the space, one more intimate, the other livelier. From the sofas, the eye passes over the tiled roofs to Brunelleschi's Dome, Giotto's Bell Tower and the tower of Palazzo Vecchio, with the Tuscan hills on the horizon. Even from the counter, a window frames the Duomo like a painting.
Reinvented classics and gin and tonics
The menu focuses on classic cocktails and on creations that borrow their codes, often with local products. Gin and tonic lovers have a wide selection of gins, and the menu also includes low-alcohol and alcohol-free drinks. To go with the drink, the bar serves “duchesse”, soft milk rolls filled with indulgent fillings. The place is best suited to an aperitivo at sunset or a last drink for two, far from the bustle of the neighbouring streets.
Practical information
The bar is open all year round, every day, from the afternoon until late in the evening; hours change according to the season (opening between 2pm and 5pm, closing between 10.30pm and 11.30pm), so it is best to check them before coming. Seating is limited: booking is recommended, especially for sunset. Expect to pay around €20 for a cocktail. Smart casual dress.
