Biarritz Bonheur: the roof of the Galeries Lafayette facing the Grande Plage
A restaurant and a rooftop right in the centre
On place Georges-Clemenceau, the crossroads from which most of Biarritz's shopping streets radiate, the Galeries Lafayette building has been home since May 2025 to a venue set right at the top. Biarritz Bonheur brings together an Art Deco dining room, a bar, a wine cellar and a roof terrace, extended by a glass pavilion. The project is led by former rugby international Imanol Harinordoquy and Biarritz restaurateur Jean-Michel Suhubiette.
The ocean beyond the rooftops
Beneath the fringed, striped parasols, among the planters, the eye travels over the rooftops of the centre to the ocean, the Grande Plage and the white silhouette of the lighthouse, which can also be seen through the dining room's large picture windows. The rooftop operates without reservations: guests come up for a morning coffee, a late-afternoon drink or a few bites as the sun goes down.
A menu by Matthias Marc
In the kitchen, starred chef Matthias Marc and executive chef Peio Hastoy put a new spin on the classics of South-West France. On the roof, the menu lines up house and classic cocktails at €13, mocktails at €10, a fine selection of gin and tonics, wines by the glass and local beers. From 6pm to 10.30pm, finger food takes over: Iberian ham or sheep's cheese croquettes, prawn tempura, croque-monsieur, and ham or cheese platters.
The rooftop pavilion and its terrace can be hired for seminars of up to 40 people, or for drinks receptions and dinners of up to 80 guests.
Practical information
The bar and rooftop are listed as open every day from 9am to 10.30pm, and the restaurant from noon to 2.30pm and from 7pm to 10.30pm; as a Sunday and Monday closure is also reported, it is best to check opening hours before you come. The restaurant can be booked online, while the rooftop welcomes guests without a reservation. The entrance is at 17 place Georges-Clemenceau, a few minutes' walk from the Grande Plage.
To rise above it all without leaving the heart of town, Biarritz Bonheur offers a break facing the ocean, from the first morning coffee to the last drink.
