A high-altitude lounge next door to Vue de monde
Lui Bar occupies the 55th floor of the Rialto's south tower, one of the skyscrapers on Collins Street, some 236 metres above the street. It shares the floor with Vue de monde, the fine-dining restaurant for which it serves as the bar, and both have been renovated in recent years. There's no terrace here: everything happens behind tall picture windows, around a circular bar and banquettes facing outwards. On one side, Port Phillip Bay and its coastline stretch to the horizon; on the other, the towers of the city centre and the surrounding neighbourhoods. To enjoy the sunset by the windows, it's best to book.
Cocktails, martinis and chef's bites
The menu alternates between seasonal creations, from A$27 to A$32, with notes of green mandarin, plum or miso, and the house's signature cocktails such as the Million Dollar Baby with vodka, strawberry, sake and yuzu (A$35), alongside a series of martinis at A$34. Lovers of rarities will also find cocktails made with vintage spirits, from A$110 to A$150, and a long list of whiskies and chartreuses. The bites come from the Vue de monde kitchen: Sydney oysters, kangaroo sausage with Vegemite mustard, wagyu tartare, caviar, and the chocolate soufflé served from 7pm.
Practical information
Open Wednesday and Thursday from 5.30pm and Friday to Sunday from 3pm, until late; closed Monday and Tuesday. The kitchen closes at 10.30pm. Online bookings for up to 12 people, with walk-ins also welcome; 10% surcharge on Sundays and public holidays. The entrance is via the Rialto plaza, at 525 Collins Street: a reception desk on the ground floor of the south tower arranges the lift ride up. The Rialto's underground car park (entry at 476 Flinders Lane) stays open to bar guests at weekends. Getting there: Southern Cross station, a few minutes' walk away; Collins Street trams, within the city centre's Free Tram Zone.
