Her Rooftop: cocktails and Thai food above Lonsdale Street

A stone's throw from Melbourne Central, the arcaded façade of 270 Lonsdale Street has been home since 2022 to Her, a stack of venues one above the other: a bar and restaurant on the ground floor, a music listening room on the first floor, the Thai canteen BKK on the third and, right at the top, Her Rooftop. You reach it by the stairs, at the very top of the building. The decor is all about cheerfulness: a marble-tiled floor, orange velvet banquettes, stools dressed in pleated skirts and a large painted ceramic mural. The glass balustrades let the eye wander towards the city-centre towers, and two retractable awnings mean you can stay outside when the weather turns.

Fruity cocktails and Thai barbecue

The menu, which changes with the seasons, lines up cocktails between A$22 and A$25: grilled pineapple margarita, nitro espresso martini, gin with lemongrass and ginger tea. Add to that Australian wines, including natural wines, a few beers and alcohol-free cocktails. On the food side, the BKK kitchen sends up its chargrilled dishes and small Thai plates to share. The venue draws the after-work crowd and fills up fast on summer evenings.

Practical information

Open daily from 11.30am until late. The rooftop works mostly on a walk-in basis: a few tables for up to 10 people can be booked between 11.30am and 6pm, along with lounge packages for groups of 8 to 30 people between noon and 6pm, up to 45 days in advance. 10% surcharge on Sundays and 15% on public holidays. The entrance is on the Drewery Lane side. Getting there: Melbourne Central station a stone's throw away, Swanston Street trams, within the CBD's Free Tram Zone.
