The View Lounge: the city through a glass rose window
A lounge perched on the 39th floor
All it takes is a ride in the elevators off the lobby of the Marriott Marquis, on Mission Street, to reach the top of the tower. The lounge takes up the entire top level: tall rounded windows, cut like a steel fan, open onto the skyscrapers of SoMa and the Financial District, the nearby Salesforce Tower and, to the west, the streets climbing toward Twin Peaks. The space is fully enclosed, which makes it a safe refuge on foggy or windy evenings, when the city's terraces turn icy. Green velvet armchairs, a marble bar and three more intimate alcoves complete the decor.
Martinis and small plates
The menu sticks to reimagined classics priced from $26 to $29: the Mission Paloma, an Old Fashioned with Maker's Mark bourbon or the TEN/89 Martini, the signature cocktail that recalls the hotel's opening in October 1989, on the very day of the Loma Prieta earthquake; a martini glass that survived that day is on display in the lounge. On Mondays, part of the proceeds from martinis goes to a children's hospital network. On the food side, Point Reyes cheese boards, adobo chicken tacos, beef sliders or tuna tataki go with the drinks until 10pm.
The alcoves, which seat 18 to 25, can be booked for a birthday or a corporate evening.
