Tomat: a roof for watching planes land
A neighborhood restaurant and its rooftop deck
Opened in fall 2024, Tomat occupies a three-level building on West 87th Street, marked by a big neon tomato. On the ground floor, a bright dining room and an open kitchen serve seasonal food with British, Persian and Japanese accents, built on produce from local farms and the restaurant's own garden; the middle floor hosts private events. At the very top, the wooden deck, shaded by red sails and lined with planters, looks out over the low rooftops of Westchester and the planes on approach to LAX.
A separate menu for the roof
The roof has its own menu, shorter than the dining room's: barbari bread, marinated olives, grilled vegetables with pistachio pesto, pizzas from $19 to $26 (margherita, spicy pepperoni, lamb kofta, porcini), a burger, and roast chicken on Saturday and Sunday. The dining room's sticky toffee pudding can be ordered up there too.
For drinks, there are beers from California breweries for $7 to $9.50, wines by the glass from $16 to $18 and the house cocktails: $20 martinis and short drinks, $18 spritzes, plus non-alcoholic options like the house-made cola.
Games, trivia and music
The deck follows a schedule posted every week: board games on Wednesday at 5pm, trivia on Thursday at 5:30pm, a DJ or jazz night on weekends, and screenings of soccer and football games. Dinner guests are invited to arrive half an hour before their reservation for a drink upstairs.
Practical information
Open Wednesday through Friday from 8am to 2:30pm and from 5pm to 8:30pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 8am straight through (until about 8:30pm); closed Monday and Tuesday. The roof's hours aren't published separately: check the weekly schedule. Online reservations are recommended for dinner, and groups of 8 or more should book by email. Free parking in front of the restaurant.
