Upstairs at The Gwen: an Art Deco terrace in the heart of River North
A lounge and a big terrace on the 5th floor
The Gwen occupies an Art Deco building on North Rush Street, steps from Michigan Avenue and the Chicago River. On the 5th floor, Upstairs at The Gwen is made up of a lounge that extends from the lobby, with custom trelliswork and plush armchairs, and a large open-air terrace: long fire tables, gray sofas with black-and-white striped cushions, umbrellas and string lights. The setting is decidedly urban: glass and stone towers all around, with the Wrigley Building's clock tower as the focal point.
From breakfast to evening cocktails
The kitchen runs all day: a Belgian waffle ($20) or an omelet in the morning, brunch on weekends, and salads, the Lux Burger ($25) or a Chicago-style hot dog ($19) at lunch and dinner. Signature and seasonal cocktails run $20 to $22. Monday through Thursday, from 4pm to 5:30pm, Lux Happy Hour offers cocktails, wine and beer at friendly prices ($13 gin and tonic, $14 margarita). On Wednesdays, bottles of wine are half price and a jazz band plays from 6pm to 8pm.
In winter, the terrace hosts Camp Lux, from October 2026 to March 2027, with fondue and whiskey cocktails around the fire, followed by Gwen's Winter Curl & Chill, from November to March, with its curling lane. The space can also be booked for parties and corporate events.
Practical information
Open year-round: breakfast from 7am, lunch on weekdays from 11am to 4pm, dinner from 4pm (2pm on weekends); the bar is open until 11pm Sunday through Thursday and until 1am on Friday and Saturday. Reservations can be made online (OpenTable). Grand station on the “L” (Red Line) is about 260 meters away.
