Z Bar: cocktails from around the world facing the Water Tower
A lounge on the roof of The Peninsula
Set on the 6th floor of The Peninsula Chicago, on East Superior Street, Z Bar pairs a sleek, contemporary indoor lounge with a long terrace edged by glass railings. Above the white armchairs, clipped boxwoods and fire tables, a glass canopy decorated with gold patterns softens the light. Below, Michigan Avenue streams by; directly across rise the stone Water Tower and its pumping station, the marble facade of Water Tower Place and, above it, the black tower of 875 North Michigan Avenue. In the evening, when the facades light up, the scene changes color.
Flavors from the four corners of the world
The menu draws on flavors from Asia, Europe and the Americas. Seasonal cocktails and classics (mojito, old fashioned, espresso martini, Tommy's margarita) are $24, house creations like the Bangkok Jam, with tequila, makrut lime leaf, lemongrass and Thai chili, are $25, and zero-proof cocktails are $18. A list of rare spirits rounds it all out. For snacking: daikon fries with Chinese sausage ($18), potato bites with caviar ($26), tuna tartare ($26) or sliders ($32).
A private room for 10 to 12 guests, with its own terrace, can be reserved for small events; the entire bar can also be booked privately.
Practical information
Open Monday through Thursday from 4pm to midnight, Friday and Saturday from 2pm to 1am, and Sunday from 2pm to midnight; the indoor lounge means you can enjoy it year-round. Online reservations are recommended. The atmosphere is hushed, better suited to a drink for two or with friends than to a big night out. The Chicago station on the “L” (Red Line) is about 260 meters away, on the edge of Streeterville and the Magnificent Mile.
