The Nest: the Storchen's lofty perch
A roof above the Limmat
The Hotel Storchen occupies an old-town building on the small Weinplatz, right at the edge of the Limmat, in Kreis 1. Its roof is home to The Nest, a seasonal bar laid out as a terrace: lounge seating, rattan armchairs, high tables, a copper-clad bar and large parasols or shade sails. The eye sweeps over the river, between the spires of the Grossmünster and the Fraumünster, to Lake Zurich and, on a clear day, all the way to the Glarus Alps.
Champagne cocktails and a short menu
Cocktails cost CHF 24 to 28: negroni, basil smash or espresso martini at CHF 24, pornstar martini at CHF 28, and a whole series of “royals” topped up with champagne at CHF 26. Alcohol-free versions cost CHF 19 to 23, bottled beers CHF 9 to 11, and the wine list makes room for Ticino wines from the house estate, the Cantina alla Maggia. A few snacks accompany the drinks. A minimum spend of CHF 35 per person applies.
On certain Sundays, the “Lazy Sunday” turns the terrace into a room for a long, leisurely breakfast, served with a glass of champagne facing the panorama.
Practical information
The Nest opens from April to October and closes during the winter. The bar opens during the day and in the evening, but opening hours depend on the weather and the temperature and may change at the last minute. In the evening, seats are allocated in order of arrival. Smart casual dress required. Tram to the Rathaus stop, then a few steps across the town hall bridge.
