El Cielo de Montera: Museo Chicote cocktails on a rooftop
The Hotel Montera rooftop
On the corner of the Gran Vía and calle de la Montera, the Hotel Montera Madrid, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, occupies a building dating from 1924. Reception is on the 9th floor, and one last level leads up to the roof, home to El Cielo de Montera, first known as El Cielo de Chicote. Several spaces follow one another, sheltered by large red and white parasols.
The terrace offers a 360-degree view over the centre: the Telefónica Building stands directly opposite, the Gran Vía stretches out on either side and the rooftops of Madrid run all the way to the horizon. The spot is hugely popular for an aperitivo and at sunset.
Museo Chicote cocktails and tapas
The cocktail list is created by the team at Museo Chicote, one of the city's oldest cocktail bars, which opened in 1931 on the Gran Vía. It plays on the Madrid saying “De Madrid al cielo” (“From Madrid to heaven”). To go with the drinks, there is a menu of tapas and small plates, and DJ sessions in the evening.
Practical information
El Cielo de Montera is open Monday to Thursday from 5pm to midnight, on Friday and Saturday from 1pm to 1am, and on Sunday from 1pm to midnight. There is no need to book to go up, but an entry fee of €10 per person is charged and then deducted from your bill; tables can be booked online with prepayment. Accompanied children are admitted until 9pm, after which the roof is reserved for adults. Gran Vía metro (lines 1 and 5) is a few steps away.
