Canvas: restaurant, bar and club on the 7th floor of the Volkshotel
A creative hotel in the east of the city
On Wibautstraat, in the Oost district, the Volkshotel is a hotel with a creative spirit that brings together rooms, shared workspaces and nightlife venues. Right at the top, on the 7th floor, Canvas spreads out in a large glass-walled room around an oval red-and-white bar, extended by an open-air terrace. The view stretches over the rooftops of east Amsterdam, the Amstel and, further off, the city centre.
The venue is open to hotel guests and Amsterdammers alike. In the morning it hosts the breakfast buffet; at lunchtime and in the evening it becomes a restaurant, then a cocktail bar once night falls.
Food for sharing and affordable cocktails
The menu changes with the time of day: lunch, à la carte dinner or a three-course sharing menu for groups of 8 to 24, not forgetting evening snacks such as bitterballen, the Dutch croquettes. At the bar, all cocktails cost the same, €12.50, from the Negroni to the Espresso Martini, and the beer list highlights Dutch and Belgian breweries.
When the restaurant becomes a dance floor
The “Canvas Nights” have made the venue's name: resident DJs on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Dutch and international artists on Fridays and Saturdays, when the tables make way for dancing. Entry is free. A neighbouring room, Klein Canvas, can be hired for private events.

Open daily, from breakfast (7–10:30am on weekdays, 8–11:30am at weekends, €16) until late at night. Restaurant tables can be booked online; the terrace is walk-in only. Phone: +31 20 261 2110. Payment by card. From Central Station, take metro 51, 53 or 54 to Wibautstraat station, exit “Graaf Florisstraat”: the hotel is right next to it. A paid car park adjoins the building.
