La Azotea de Barrio: a simple, friendly rooftop on the Alameda
On the top floor of an Art Deco building
On Calle Dr. Mora, on the west side of the Alameda Central, Barrio Alameda occupies a carefully restored 1920s building, which brings together shops, offices and places to eat or have a drink. You climb a few flights of stairs, admiring the original lamps and finishes, up to the 4th and top floor: there La Azotea spreads out its wooden terrace, its parasols, its planters and its counter. Below, the tall trees of the Alameda; opposite, the silhouette of the Torre Latinoamericana and the rooftops of the Centro.
Homemade food and grilled dishes
The menu stays simple and generous: hummus, tlayuda oaxaqueña with chapulines, tuna tiradito, aguachile, quesabirrias and guacamole for nibbling; salads, sandwiches, burgers and choripán; grilled tuna, arrachera or rib eye for the hungriest. Homemade desserts, such as corn cake, round off the meal.
Cocktails without breaking the bank
The bar offers classics from 120 pesos, negroni, margarita, house mojito, clericot or tinto de verano, and a series of mezcal creations, from 140 to 180 pesos, as well as beers and wine. The relaxed atmosphere draws plenty of people in the afternoon and evening, with background music that leaves room for conversation.
Practical information
Open every day: Monday to Wednesday from 11am to 9.30pm, Thursday to Saturday from 11am to 10.30pm, Sunday from 11am to 8pm. Access via the Barrio Alameda staircase, Dr. Mora 9: expect to climb on foot. Arrive early at the end of the week. Hidalgo metro station (lines 2 and 3) or Bellas Artes (lines 2 and 8), a few minutes' walk away.
