Empireo Rooftop: Santa Croce and the Duomo from the poolside
The roof of the Plaza Hotel Lucchesi
The Plaza Hotel Lucchesi stands on Lungarno della Zecca Vecchia, east of the historic centre, very close to the basilica of Santa Croce. Since 2014, its top floor has been home to Empireo, an American-style bar set around a small swimming pool, with outdoor lounge areas, high tables and a counter facing the panorama.
A view over monumental Florence
The side of the basilica of Santa Croce and its tall bell tower fill the foreground. Further away, the dome of the Duomo, Giotto's Bell Tower and the towers of the centre stand out, while on the other side the Arno flows towards the bridges, at the foot of the Oltrarno hills. The tower of Palazzo Vecchio also appears between the roofs. The spectacle is at its best at sunset.
Cocktails and bites from the chef
The in-house bartenders have created a menu of cocktails served on the terrace, accompanied by small bites prepared by the kitchen of the hotel restaurant, on the floor below. Guests settle into the sofas around the pool or at the counter, facing the view. The pool itself is reserved for hotel guests, but it is part of the setting for everyone who comes up for a drink.
Practical information
Empireo opens only during the summer season and reopens every summer. During the day, the terrace is reserved for hotel guests; from 7.30pm, it is open to outside visitors, by reservation only, online or by phone. Opening dates change from year to year, so it is best to check them before you come. The hotel is a stone's throw from Piazza Santa Croce and about twenty minutes' walk from Santa Maria Novella station, through the historic centre.
