A seasonal terrace in the heart of the Altstadt

The LOUIS Hotel looks directly onto the Viktualienmarkt, Munich's large open-air market, a stone's throw from Marienplatz. On its roof, a wooden terrace lined with potted plants, parasols and floral tablecloths welcomes the public every year from May to September, every day when the weather allows. The 2026 season opened on 1 May with new light-coloured furniture.

The church towers of the old town within reach

The terrace is not perched very high: it sits at the level of the Altstadt rooftops, which gives it the intimate charm of a hidden garden. The view passes over the red tiles to the two green onion domes of the Frauenkirche, the neo-Gothic spire of the New Town Hall and the bell tower of St. Peter's Church close by. Late in the day, the golden light on the rooftops steals the show.

Seasonal menu and spritzes

The kitchen of the LOUIS Grillroom, the hotel's restaurant, serves a light menu up here at lunchtime and Mediterranean-inspired dishes in the evening: smoked almonds with goat's cheese, oysters, grilled vegetables and meats. For drinks, spritzes range from €11 to €13.50, the Negroni is €14, and the Moscow Mule and the Paloma are €13.50, with a fine selection of champagnes by the glass and by the bottle.

On Saturday afternoons, a DJ livens up the terrace, and food events punctuate the summer, centred on asparagus, caviar or seafood. The terrace can also be booked for a reception.

Practical information

From May to September, the terrace is open daily from noon to 10pm in fine weather; if it rains, dinner is served in the first-floor restaurant, and the hotel's Sparkling Bar takes over from 10pm to midnight. Booking online, and on request for groups of 10 or more. Getting there: Marienplatz station (U3, U6 and S-Bahn), a few minutes' walk away.
