Frau im Mond: the Isar seen from the roof of the Deutsches Museum
A rooftop on Museum Island
Opened in 2022, Frau im Mond sits on the roof of the Deutsches Museum's aviation hall, on the Museumsinsel, right next to the exhibition devoted to space travel. A room of around 200 m² opens onto a 600 m² terrace, with some 300 seats in total. You can reach it from the museum or, without a ticket, by an outdoor lift, including after the exhibition halls have closed.
The Isar and its bridges below
Facing due south, the terrace looks out over the Isar, its pebble banks where locals swim in summer, and three of its bridges: the Corneliusbrücke, the Reichenbachbrücke and the Wittelsbacherbrücke. It is not very high up, but such a view of the river and its green banks is rare in the city; in the distance, a few church towers poke up. Part of the terrace, called the “Raumkapsel”, can be booked for groups.
From breakfast to spritz
The day begins with breakfast served until 11.15am, followed by a lunch menu until 5pm; during museum hours, you can also order at the counter. In the evening, from Thursday to Saturday, the menu switches to pinsas, pasta, salads and grilled meats, with cocktails between €12.50 and €14.50 (house Negroni, Moon Mule, Whiskey Sour) and spritzes at €10.90. For larger tables, 1.5-litre “rockets” of spritz or house cocktail are brought to the table.
In winter, an Eisstock lane, the Bavarian take on curling, is set up on the roof, and the venue can be hired for parties or corporate meetings.
Practical information
Open all year round, daily from 9am to 5pm, and also from 6pm to 11pm Thursday to Saturday. Booking online is recommended in the evening; mornings and lunchtimes are more relaxed. Getting there: S-Bahn Isartor (all lines on the central trunk line), tram 17 to the Deutsches Museum stop, or U1 and U2 to Fraunhoferstraße. Outside museum hours, the outdoor lift is in the museum garden, near the Corneliusbrücke.
