Occhio d'Oro: Tuscany on the roof, facing the Eschenheimer Turm
A restaurant-bar at the top of a listed hotel
North of the city centre, on Eschenheimer Tor square, the Flemings Selection Hotel occupies a building protected as a historic monument. Its 7th floor, on the roof, houses the Occhio d'Oro: a long room bathed in light, where a travertine wall inlaid with coloured glass faces the picture windows, and a bar dressed in green marble, oak and brass. A covered terrace extends the room. The medieval Eschenheimer Turm is almost at eye level, the skyscrapers of the banking district form the backdrop and, in fine weather, the Taunus is on the horizon. Nostalgics ride up in the paternoster, the open-cabin lift that never stops moving.
Tuscan sharing dishes and cocktails
The menu, which changes with the seasons, revisits the classics of Florence and Tuscany: fresh pasta, pepper-braised beef, bistecca alla fiorentina or sea bass in a salt crust, often served in the middle of the table to be shared. At the bar, cocktails cost around €17, such as the house Basil Smash or the Golden Hour in Portofino, alongside a fine selection of Italian wines; snacks are served there until 10.30pm. A brunch with a view is also offered on Sunday lunchtime, and themed dinners punctuate the year, right up to New Year's Eve.
