FRANZISKA: the skyline seen from the Henninger Turm
The barrel of the Henninger Turm
For decades, the Henninger brewery's silo tower dominated Sachsenhausen with its strange barrel-shaped crown. Demolished and then rebuilt as a 140-metre residential tower, it has regained its silhouette and, right at the top, a restaurant. A fast lift takes you up in about forty seconds.
The circular room is glazed from floor to ceiling: on one side, the towers of the banking district beyond the River Main; on the other, the rooftops of the south of the city and the surrounding countryside. At sunset and then at night, the spectacle is complete.
Reinvented German cuisine and the Barrel Bar
The kitchen, open to the dining room with a counter where you dine facing the cooks, reinvents German and Hessian classics: Königsberg meatballs in tortellini, Leberkäse carpaccio, fish fried in beer batter, a cherry-shaped Black Forest cake. The five-course menu costs €99.99 and the tasting menu of seven small plates €149.99; from 9.30pm, a late menu offers individual dishes. In one half of the barrel, the Barrel Bar, with its green marble counter and mirrored back wall, serves house creations, great classics and bespoke cocktails, not forgetting draught beer from the Henninger house.
