Johnny's Green Room: la dolce vita on the rooftops of Carlton
An Italian-style terrace above Lygon Street
Lygon Street in Carlton is nicknamed Melbourne's Little Italy, and the King & Godfree complex, now home to a delicatessen and restaurants, is one of its landmarks. Its roof hosts Johnny's Green Room, reached by the lift in King & Godfree Lane. The work of designer Dion Hall, the terrace combines Douglas fir, terracotta tiles, deckchairs and umbrellas; a semi-retractable roof and fireplaces take over when the weather cools. Beyond the rooftops of Carlton and the neighbourhood's trees, the view stretches towards the towers of the CBD.
Spritzes, pizzas and DJs
Chef Karen Martini has created an Italian sharing menu: fried olives and almonds, calamari skewers, burrata, gnocchi and pizzas made with dough fermented for 48 hours. The cocktails reinvent Italian classics, from the Aperol Spritz at A$22 to the Limoncello Margarita at A$26, alongside beer on tap and easy-drinking wines. A DJ line-up livens up the rooftop from Thursday to Sunday, from the afternoon until midnight at weekends.
