Palm Springs and Pioneertown in the heart of Hollywood
At 6516 Selma Avenue, the Hollywood VOLUME hotel is home to Desert 5 Spot on its roof, a bar inspired by 1970s Palm Springs, Joshua Tree hangouts, roadside motels and the Western town of Pioneertown. A flashing neon sign, cacti, wooden banquettes, a gallery of Western posters and a jukebox: the decor fully embraces its kitschy side. The terrace, sheltered by a pergola, looks out toward the Hollywood Hills and the city's rooftops, and a pool completes the roof. Ka'teen restaurant, in the same hotel, shares the address.
Margaritas, tacos and country music
The bar puts tequila and mezcal front and center: margaritas, the Ring of Fire, with mezcal and prickly pear, served in a cactus-shaped glass, the Jolene, with watermelon and strawberry, Ranch Water, or a big margarita “cactus” to share with a group. For snacks, there are tacos, quesadillas and nachos. The house band, The Desert 5, plays regularly, country DJs take over on weekends, and beginner line dancing lessons are held on Wednesday and Friday at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm; on Wednesday at 9pm, it's time for country karaoke. Special events punctuate the year, like the Halloween parties.
Practical information
Open Tuesday through Thursday from 6pm, and Friday and Saturday from 5pm; it closes at midnight on Tuesday and Wednesday, and at 2am Thursday through Saturday. On weekdays, from 6pm to 8pm, “Desert Hour” brings $9 cocktails and budget-friendly tacos. Walk-ins are welcome as space allows; groups of six or more can book a package. Dress code: no shorts or athletic tops, no sweatpants, no flip-flops. Hollywood/Vine and Hollywood/Highland stations on the Metro B Line are about 600 and 700 meters away.
