Café des Épices: a break above Spice Square
In the heart of the souks
Café des Épices looks out over Rahba Kedima square, one of the most typical squares in the souks, where women vendors sell baskets and woven hats amid the carpet shops. People drop in at any hour, from breakfast to dinner. The decor combines Marrakech's red tadelakt, rough wooden tables, hanging hammam buckets, reed furniture and beldi glasses.
Three levels up to the roof
The café spreads over three levels: a ground floor opening onto the square, a non-smoking lounge upstairs and a roof terrace on the top floor. Beneath straw parasols and reed screens, low tables and Berber cushions overlook the bustle of the square; beyond the rooftops, the peaks of the Atlas stand out on clear days.
Fresh juices and alcohol-free cocktails
No alcohol here. The menu focuses on spiced coffees, mint tea, freshly squeezed juices and a range of alcohol-free cocktails at 50 or 60 dirhams, from a virgin mojito to a pineapple and cinnamon colada. On the food side: Moroccan breakfast until 11.30am (85 to 90 dirhams for the set menu), salads, harira, sandwiches, falafel, a burger served in traditional bread and Moroccan pastries, all at gentle prices.
Practical information
Open every day from 9am to 11pm. You can book online, but most customers simply turn up; at busy times, you may have to wait for a table on the roof. Casual dress. From Jemaa el-Fna, follow Souk Semmarine to Spice Square; the restaurant Nomad, from the same family, is right next door.
