NENI: mezze to share facing the cathedral
A glazed hall on the top floor
The NENI occupies the 8th and top floor of the 25hours Hotel The Circle, a listed circular building on the Im Klapperhof, a stone's throw from the Friesenplatz. The hall, of about 250 m², is lined with floor-to-ceiling picture windows: hanging plants, red chairs, long turquoise high tables and an open kitchen make up a colourful, lively setting.
From the tables near the windows, the eye travels over the rooftops of the centre to the cathedral's two spires. The setting suits a weekday lunch just as well as a dinner among friends.
Israeli cuisine to share
The menu blends Israeli, Romanian and Spanish influences with local produce, and everything is shared: the dishes arrive in the middle of the table, in a cheerful, deliberate jumble. Among the mezze are the house hummus (€10.50), the hummus trio (€24), the burnt aubergine with caramelised kimchi (€12.50) or bite-sized falafel (€10). As for main dishes, the Jerusalem plate with spicy chicken costs €24.50 and the sabich €21. To taste a bit of everything, a sharing menu is offered at €58 per person, for two diners or more. For an aperitif, a spritz, gin and tonic or negroni costs €11.50 to €12. After the meal, the Monkey Bar, on the same landing, takes over for a last drink.
Practical information
The restaurant is open Monday to Friday from noon to 11pm, Saturday and Sunday from 12.30pm to 11pm; the kitchen closes at 10.30pm. Tables are booked online on the restaurant's website. The venue can also be hired for parties or group dinners. The Friesenplatz stop, served by lines 3, 4, 5, 12 and 15, is about 300 metres' walk away.
