Bar Botanik: a conservatory perched on a water tower
At the top of the Wasserturm
The Wasserturm Hotel Cologne occupies a former brick water tower, converted into a hotel and surrounded by a garden, on a quiet street in Altstadt-Süd. The Rhine and the Chocolate Museum are only a few hundred metres away. The bar has settled right at the top, on the 11th floor, about 35 metres above the ground, and welcomes all visitors, not just hotel guests.
The room has the air of a winter garden: large picture windows, lush green plants, wood, leather and mustard-coloured banquettes. Outside, the terrace offers a full panorama of the city: the cathedral's two spires, the rooftops of the centre, the Kranhäuser of the Rhine harbour. At sunset, DJs often accompany the evening, especially at weekends.
Herbal cocktails and food to share
The menu draws on the plant world: basil, sage, thyme, dill, pandan or cherry blossom lift the house creations, priced at €18. House spritzes cost €16, non-alcoholic cocktails €12, and a Kölsch reworked with raspberries and thyme €8. From the kitchen in the evening, you share edamame, hummus, truffle fries, saffron prawns or a rib-eye steak.
Practical information
The bar is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 5pm to 1am; on Monday, it is reserved for hotel guests. In the warmer months, the roof also opens during the day, with coffee, fresh juices and light drinks; this option stops in autumn and winter. No reservations: you just turn up. Entry is for adults only, with a stated minimum age of 21. Opening hours may change during private events. The Poststraße stop (trams 3, 4, 16 and 18) is about 120 metres away.
