Sweethearts Terraza: the Yucatán on a Kings Cross rooftop

The Potts Point Hotel occupies a building on Darlinghurst Road, in the heart of Kings Cross, and brings together several bars stacked one above the other. Sweethearts Terraza takes up the top level, reached by the stairs. The roof, partly covered and extended with planters of palms and greenery, has been redesigned around a Yucatán coast theme: tiles, warm tones, long tables and a bar counter. Don't expect a spectacular view: the building is low-rise and the outlook takes in treetops and the neighbouring buildings of Kings Cross. People come mainly for the atmosphere, sunny in the afternoon and lively at night.

Mexican food, tequila and mezcal

Chef Roberto García's menu focuses on Yucatán-inspired sharing plates: Yucatán-style oysters, barramundi ceviche, poc chuc pork skewers, house-made tortillas. House cocktails, from A$21 to A$26, put tequila and mezcal front and centre, and you can treat yourself to a tequila tasting. On Wednesday evenings there's an unlimited set deal for A$34; on Saturdays, a bottomless brunch costs A$99. Resident DJs take to the decks after dark, and the terrace can be hired for parties of up to 150 people. A Melbourne Cup day is held here in November.

Practical information

Open Wednesday to Friday from 5pm to midnight, Saturday and Sunday from noon to midnight; closed Monday and Tuesday. Online booking is recommended for brunch and at weekends. The terrace is reached by stairs (seven flights). Getting there: Kings Cross station, two minutes' walk away.
