Blu Bar on 36: the Opera House at your feet
A glass-walled bar on the 36th floor
The Shangri-La Hotel rises above the historic precinct of The Rocks, and its bar occupies level 36, the same as Altitude restaurant. There's no terrace here: large windows run the length of the room, and the view plunges down to the Opera House, the Harbour Bridge, Circular Quay and the ferries criss-crossing the harbour. At sunset, as the city lights come on, the spectacle alone is worth the trip up.
Cocktails, martinis and special nights
The menu mixes house creations, reinvented classics and timeless standards, with a few bites to go with your drinks, such as Sydney rock oysters or marinated olives. The bar follows the city's calendar: a dedicated cocktail during the Vivid festival of light in May and June, a martini trolley in the depths of the southern winter, and a New Year's Eve party with a DJ and views of the harbour fireworks, bookings required. Expect to pay around A$28 to A$29 for a cocktail.
Practical information
Open daily from late morning until late; a surcharge applies on Sundays and public holidays. There's no need to book for a drink, but groups of ten or more should contact the hotel. Getting there: Circular Quay station and ferry wharves about five minutes' walk away; the L2 light rail line also serves Circular Quay.
